Aerial Roots is a collaborative art installation exploring Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging. Together with four members of the Washington DC chapter of Ikebana International—Sheila Advani, Diana Cull, Fay McLaren, and Rosalie Ingenito—we created a multidisciplinary exhibition combining live floral arrangements with paintings and sculpture.

The installation juxtaposes the meditative nature of Ikebana—a disciplined ritual practice focused on harmony and balance—with visual art responses. Each floral arrangement served as a catalyst for visual interpretation, creating a dialogue between traditional Japanese aesthetics and contemporary art.

By bringing together diverse artistic mediums, Aerial Roots invites viewers to contemplate the subtle connections between natural form, cultural practice, and creative interpretation.
